Folklore does not need to be original

18 Oct

students, don’t worry about reading other people’s entries and trumping or duplicating them. You’re writing about folklore and myth. By definition: it is not going to be original, in material. You will have a different take, as long as you don’t get bogged down in reading other people’s stuff first. If you all write about turkeys and apples, that’s okay with me–Momotaro is still the same peach after hundreds of years, but the story keeps changing…how does your version of the apple or the turkey or the peach (etc.) work?

Alternatively, you could investigate the mythic function of the White Castle hamburger in the journey of Harold and Kumar. The hamburger as a device for liberation is definitely understudied :).
